A solar AA battery charger does one thing, and does it well: it keeps your rechargeable AA batteries full. This is a very specialized niche in the grand scheme of things. The American National Safety Institute (ANSI) standardized the double A size of battery in 1947. At the time, household electronics were an emerging field. ANSI stepped in to standardize things and the end result is that today, you don’t have to comb the earth to find the right battery for your camera, or remote.

Things like a solar AA battery charger would never have been possible without this standardization. A contemporary example which raises a lot of interesting parallels is the cell phone industry. Cell phones came into their own in the 1990’s, but each manufacturer produced phones with a different set of specifications. This meant that every time you changed phones everything from your charger to your headset was liable to become useless, because the ports weren’t the same.

Over the past 10 years, some solidification of cell phone technology has occurred. Micro scan disk ports have standardized expansion memory, a smart chip now holds most of the personally important data, such as contacts and settings, and these items can be switched from phone to phone. Without the benefit of ANSI standardization however, there’s no telling if anything like this would have happened to the battery manufacturing industry. After all, if you want to see a nightmare of individualization, look at watch batteries, there are about as many types as there are watches!
